| September 5, 2002 Concluding a conscientious selection process that began with the review of 11 proposals in April, the work of artist Barry Stromberger of Twisp, has been chosen to become a permanent memorial to firefighters in Winthrop's town park. A panel of community members that included business owners, firefighters, forest service personnel, professional artists and others considered feedback received from the public who viewed three finalist sculptures displayed this summer around the Valley. Out of the 140 comments, there was a clear indication that the public, especially the firefighting community, found that Stromberger's simple, powerful steel silhouette of an androgynous firefighter working among snags, honored the spirit of firefighting in a unique and recognizable manner. In the fall of 2007 the memorial was completed and dedicated. 17 windland firefighters are honored on the memorial for their loss of life dating back to 1928 | ||||
